Understanding COSHH

COSHH regulations take into consideration a wide range of substances such as fumes, gases, chemicals, and biological agents. The regulations were developed with the primary aim to protect people within the working environment.

Legal obligations for conducting COSHH Assessment

Creating a safe working environment is a legal requirement of employers, to safeguard employees from harm triggered by hazardous substances. This is where COSHH assessments are executed to evaluate the risks.

  1. Identify harmful substances – Businesses must establish what substances within the working environment could cause harm to employees’ or visitors’ health, such as fumes, chemicals, dust, vapours, and biological agents. Employers should review the substances labels or data sheets provided for safety reasons by manufacturers.
  2. Evaluate the risks – this involves evaluating risks linked with using, storing, or disposal of potentially harmful substances. Employers will need to access the possible ways employees/visitors may become exposed to substances, including ingestion, skin contact, or inhalation. Evaluating the likelihood of this occurring and the seriousness of harm resulting from exposure.
  3. Apply control measures – following the evaluation, employers should apply all necessary control measures to reduce or eliminate the risks. Control measures involve finding alternative substances which are less hazardous, correct storage and handling methods, and using PPE alongside regular examinations of equipment.
  4. Delivering training and information – delivering training to employees is essential to ensure the correct handling, use, and disposal of hazardous substances occur reducing the risk of exposure or injuries happening. Employers must make employees aware of the risks linked with using the substances. Workspaces should have adequate warning signs, instructions, and employees should have access to data safety sheets.
  5. Continuous monitoring of exposure – In some incidences, employers will need to continue monitoring employees’ exposure to substances, reviewing if control measures are effective and ensuring exposure limits are not surpassed.
  6. Conduct frequent reviews – reviewing COSHH assessments is necessary to conduct, reviews should take place when any changes take place within the workplace or updated information comes to light regarding the hazards linked to the substances.
